Ciaran Brennan - Editor

Continuing our look at different freelance jobs, this week we meet Ciaran Brennan.

“I'm a freelance editor, but that's something of a catch-all title and the responsibilities change from job to job. A more accurate description would be to say that I'm a 'magazine producer'. My main talent seems to be for getting the various components that make a magazine together and getting them to a printer on time.

“This is my second spell as a freelance and I've been doing it this
time around for about two and a half years. It wasn't a conscious
decision to go freelance; a (non-journalism) project I'd been working
on for a few years fell through and I was looking around for my next
opportunity when a former colleague asked me to do some part-time
magazine work. I'm glad he did, as I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed
it.

“The worst thing about being freelance is the uncertainty of work, I suppose. You're also never really in charge of anything. There's always numerous people making decisions with and against you.

“However, the freedom to work your own hours is fantastic and the money can be good too.”
